Bariatric Rescue

With increasing numbers of difficult rescues year on year, and the ever-present risks of injuries to rescuers, this course covers best practice in the movement of heavy casualties to minimise risks to rescuers and improve casualty care. This short but comprehensive course equips students with the knowledge to identify patients requiring additional care, how to best care for such patients including input on the physiology and associated medical risks present, planning multi-agency responses, comprehensive journey planning and structural considerations. Numerous drills focus on the practical skills of rescuing heavy patients from a variety of common locations, including from small spaces such as a toilet cubicle, from a bath, from bed, out of a vehicle and then on the movement of such patients through typical households. Students will finish the course with a greater knowledge of how to ensure their own safety, and to provide better patient care throughout rescue operations.
